His Excellency the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, visited the Rent Control Department to familiarize himself with operations of the Department.
H.E. Alhaji Dr. Bawumia, was accompanied by the Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, his Deputy, Hon. Barbara Asher Ayisi, the Chief Director, Mr. Solomon Asoalla, and some officials from the Ministry.
After visiting the various offices of the Department, the Vice President interacted with the staff and some clients who were there for rent related issues. Alhaji Bawumia, disclosed that Government would modernize the Rent Control Department by digitizing its operations.
He explained that, the digitization would go a long way help landlords, tenants and the Department in carrying out its work efficiently. Landlords would register their properties and both parties would submit their tenancy agreements as well as file their complaints electronically. ‘This will reduce the long queues at the Department and enhance efficiency’, he stated.
H.E. the Vice President said, Cabinet has received and is working on a new Rent Control Bill to replace the existing Rent Control Act (Act 220), passed in 1963 . The Bill when passed, will enhance the operations of the Department.
He noted that the major problem of rent issues is the inadequate supply of housing in the country. Dr. Bawumia however, assured Ghanaians that, Government will improve the supply of housing stock, especially low income housing, which the good people of Ghana can afford.
