EMBARK ON VOLUNTARY DESILTING OF YOUR GUTTERS TO AVOID FLOODING-MINISTER
The Hon. Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, joined the people of Chorkor in the Accra Metropolitan area for voluntary desilting of chocked gutters in the community.
This follows the call by the Minister during a press briefing at the Ministry of Information where he appealed to Ghanaians to embark on voluntary national desilting of drains to contain the impending floods.
Briefing the media, Hon. Atta Akyea indicated that floods have the tendency of destroying lives, livelihood and properties and therefore, in anticipation of the rains Ghanaians should endeavour to desilt their gutters to mitigate flooding during heavy downpour.
“We are awakening the consciousness of Ghanaians that we should desilt our gutters so that whenever we have heavy downpour, we are not going to experience the crisis of flooding”, he added.
Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to embark on educational campaigns to sensitise the people to stop disposing off refuse into the gutters which cause flooding.
The Hon. Minister and his entourage also inspected ongoing dredging and desilting works at Chemu Lagoon, Sukura Bola Junction drains and Zamramaline drains all in Accra.
The exercise, which was organised by the Zoomlion Ghana limited, brought together the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Hon. Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, the Chief Director of Ministry of Works and Housing, Mr. Solomon Asoalla, the Executive Chairman of Zoomlion Company Limited, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong and some officials.
