ATTA AKYEA TOURS FLOOD-PRONE AREAS IN ACCRA
The Hon. Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, has inspected some flood- prone areas in Accra. The inspection was to enable him assess the situation on the ground following the downpour on Saturday.
The Minister inspected the Odaw River at Circle, drains at Kasoa toll booth, Kasoa Old Barrier and Madina Redco.
Addressing the media after the inspection, Hon. Atta Akyea cautioned drivers to avoid driving through flooded roads to prevent casualties. “Where because of floods a road has become impassable, my view is that stop your vehicle and not driving through the flood. We are not in Noah’s Ark for you to dare the floods”, he stated.
The Hon. Minister noted that flooding problems could be avoided if Ghanaians stop dumping refuse into drains as the Government is also doing its part to mitigate the menace.
He therefore, urged Ghanaians to voluntarily desilt chocked gutters in their communities to avoid spillover during rainfall.
Hon. Atta Akyea, disclosed that plans are underway to expand the capacities of the existing drains which would cost about $200 million.
The Hon. Minister was accompanied by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr. Solomon Asoalla, Director of Hydrological Services Department, Mr. Hubert Wusuansah, Director of Policy, Planning, Budget, Monitoring and Evaluation, Rev. Stephen Yaw Osei and some officials.
