Ghana-Turkey Seeks Collaboration on Affordable Housing

The Minister of Works and Housing Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, has said Ghana and Turkey will collaborate to roll out affordable and social housing for the good people of Ghana.

He said housing is a top priority on the Government’s agenda and that with the advancement in technology of Turkey in the construction sector, partnering with Turkey would see mass housing in the country within a short period when the partnership materialised.

The Minister said this when the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Ghana, Her Excellency Ozlem Ergun Ulueren paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Accra to formally introduce herself and also discuss ways of collaboration between the Ministry and Turkish business community in the areas of affordable housing and drainage construction in Ghana.

Hon. Asenso-Boakye assured the Ambassador of the Government’s commitment to provide an enabling environment for investors in the country and also to provide land and tax incentives for developers so that affordable housing can be constructed to fill the infrastructure gap.

He disclosed that the Ministry is in the process of developing a National Housing Authority to plan and manage affordable housing in Ghana, saying relevant stakeholders will be engaged for their inputs in that regard.

Touching on drainage, he stated the Ministry has been working on drainage systems in the country to mitigate flooding. However, any plan or support to enhance the country’s drainage system is highly welcome adding that there is the need to extend the drainage system to other cities of Ghana since the perennial flooding in recent times have affected other cities as well.

Her Excellency, Ozlem Ergun Ulueren, congratulated the Minister on his appointment and thanked him for the opportunity. She assured the Minister of Turkey’s readiness to partner and support Ghana in the area of housing and drainage.

She added that Turkey has technologies and a huge construction sector that when collaborated, could help Ghana solve the infrastructure situation in the country. She disclosed that Turkey ranks 3rd in the world in terms of construction.
