Minister For Works And Housing Inspects Flood Prone Area
Hon. Atta Akyea, The Minister for Works and Housing together with the management of the Ministry inspected the flood prone areas that were seriously affected by the downpour on Sunday, 26th February, 2016.
At Asylum Down, a bridge constructed over the main drain a few months ago to facilitate water flow from the Nima drains to the Odaw River had collapsed. According to some residents this occurrence caused their homes to flood which led to the destruction of their properties worth thousands of cedis.
Reaction to this incident, the Hon. Minister criticised the contractor who constructed the bridge and assured the residents that the Ministry will investigate and sanction the contractor appropriately.
The Hon. Minister also visited Alajo and the Odaw River at Kwame Nkrumah interchange were the floods had swept away the wares of traders.
Hon. Atta Akyea emphasised the need and the importance of finding a lasting solution to this perennial flooding which continue to destroy lives and property during raining season than to resort to temporary measures which are costly.
According to the Hon. Minister, an amount of $700 million is required to implement a master plan that had been drawn to end the perennial floods. He further stated that “I am going to push that we find funds to do it”.
To ameliorate and prevent the loss of lives and properties during the coming raining season, Hon. Atta Akyea assured that, the Ministry will work together with Dredge Masters t desilt the drains.
